Trooper Lather was killed as he and a Howard County Deputy were trying to stop a car and it struck his cruiser.

Trooper Lather had answered the deputies call for assistance in stopping the vehicle traveling over 95 mph. The vehicle hit Trooper Lather's cruiser in the rear, causing it to crash, while the trooper was in front trying to slow the car down.
