We regret to announce the line-of-duty death of Fort Wayne Fire Department Captain Eric Balliet.

Captain Balliet died of an apparent heart attack while engaged in a physically strenuous nighttime training exercise at an abandoned commercial structure at approximately 10:30 Wednesday evening.

In addition to being a 19-year veteran of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, Captain Balliet served as a Reserve Deputy with the Allen County Sheriff's Department and as a Allen County Deputy Coroner. He is a third-generation Balliet to serve with the Allen County Sheriff's Department, and he was slated for promotion to Battalion Chief with the Fort Wayne Fire Department in the next few months.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Please keep the Balliet and Allen County public safety families in your thoughts and prayers.
