The Madison Fire Department currently serves a population of approximately 11,967.

One of the largest volunteer fire departments in Indiana, The Madison Fire Department is organizationally unique in that it is comprised of six independent fire companies, all operating as parties under one contract with the City.

The first of those companies, Fairplay Fire Co. #1, is the oldest fire company in Indiana, having been established in 1841.

Washington Fire Co. # 2 operates out of the oldest active fire station in Indiana which was built in 1848.
