Incident
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Officer Burns and a second officer responded to a report of a disturbance in a motel room of the Motel 6 in the 1000 block of Highway K. As the officers approached, a 21-year old male opened fire. Both officers were struck.
The officers returned fire and fatally wounded the assailant.
Officer Burns was airlifted to an area hospital where he later died. The second officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
