Volunteer Firefighter McClanahan stopped to offer assistance at what he believed to be a motor vehicle accident. A police officer was already on the scene, and there was a vehicle off the roadway partially in a ditch.
Firefighter McClanahan identified himself as a firefighter and asked if assistance was needed. The officer asked him to remain, and the motorist questioned whether he was really a firefighter. Firefighter McClanahan displayed his firefighter credentials and also determined that the individual was not injured in any way.
A short time later, the suspect reached into the vehicle, removed a shotgun, and opened fire on the officer and Firefighter McClanahan. Firefighter McClanahan received fatal wounds and died at the scene. The officer returned fire and struck and killed the suspect.
