As Deputy Petry and other members of his agency attempted to serve warrants and a protective order at a residence, a suspect opened fire from inside the residence. Deputy Petry was shot and killed immediately.
Other deputies returned fire and officers from multiple agencies responded to assist.
A shootout ensued as the suspect remained barricaded over a period of hours. By the time the suspect eventually surrendered, a total of six law enforcement officers and a firefighter/Emergency Management Director had been shot. Deputy Petry and Prestonsburg Police Captain Richard Frasure had been killed, and Prestonsburg Police Officer Jacob Chaffins had been gravely injured. Officer Chaffins died the following evening.
