As members of the Floyd County Sheriff's office attempted to serve warrants and a protective order at a residence, a suspect opened fire from inside. Deputy William Petry was shot and killed immediately.
Other deputies returned fire and officers from multiple agencies responded to assist.
A shootout ensued as the suspect remained barricaded over a period of hours. By the time the suspect eventually surrendered, a total of six law enforcement officers and a firefighter/Emergency Management Director had been shot. Deputy Petry and Captain Frasure had been killed, and Prestonsburg Police Officer Jacob Chaffins had been gravely injured. Officer Chaffins died the following evening.
Captain Frasure served with the Prestonsburg Police Department for over 39 years.
