While assisting other officers on a traffic stop, Officer Burton had her K9 partner, Brev, conduct an "open-air sniff" around the moped the suspect had been operating. The K9 positively indicated the presence of narcotics. As Officer Burton was putting Brev back into her patrol vehicle, the suspect began to make furtive movements and officers ordered him to show his hands. Officer Burton immediately ran toward the suspect as he drew a weapon and opened fire. Officer Burton was struck. Other officers returned fire and struck the suspect.
Officer Burton was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to another facility for a higher level of care.
The incident occurred in the area of 12th and C Streets.
After several days, it was determined that Officer Burton's injuries were unsurvivable. She was taken off life support on September 1st. She was expected to survive only a few hours, but she held on for 17 days.
