Deputy Marshal David Brown was checking on a suspicious person behind the Westfield High School while investigating the theft of livestock and requested a records check on the subject over the radio.
When the dispatcher was unable to contact Deputy Marshal Brown with the reply, a second officer was sent to check on him. Upon this officer's arrival, Deputy Marshal Brown was found shot to death in his patrol car.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended and convicted of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, where he later died.
